Renting a steel door guard is billed by the month for as long as a property is empty. A lock you own is paid for once and can move from one empty property to the next. This calculator puts the two side by side, using a national door-guard vendor’s published rates and the current price of the InvinciBolt Lock.
- Rented steel door guard: $20.97 to install and $33.35 per door for each month, for every door and every vacancy. These are one national vendor’s rates for government buyers on its federal supply schedule price list, updated June 26, 2026. The same list bills transportation separately and has other service charges, which are not included here. Private buyers may pay more or less.
- InvinciBolt Lock: one lock per door, at the current price on the product page, bought once and moved to the next property. Shipping and sales tax are added at checkout and are not included here.
- The estimate assumes the vacancies come one after another. If two properties are empty at the same time, each needs its own lock.
What the numbers leave out
- A steel door guard covers the whole opening, door glass included, and the vendor installs and removes it. The InvinciBolt Lock covers one door, not windows or door glass, and you install and remove it yourself.
- The InvinciBolt Lock leaves a bolt hole and screw holes in the frame to fill when it comes off. Taking the Lock Off shows how.
- Rekeying, a hasp and padlock, and plywood board-up are other options. Ways to Secure a Vacant Property’s Door compares all five.
Only while it’s empty
The InvinciBolt Lock cannot be opened from inside, so it is for empty buildings only and comes off before anyone moves in. See Safe Use and Property Access.
